It all began
when…
Destineak formed in 2004, after falling in love at a gig. Admittedly, Bobby and Christina moved a little fast. Within moments they had kissed. After only an hour they witnessed one another shred on stage. By the end of the night they were hurriedly loading Bobby’s drums into his pick up truck, eager for some alone time so they could jam. Well that jam has lasted for over 5 years now, and after countless floor thumping shows and a new 3 album deal with Moshpit Productions, it is only getting louder.
Bobby James and Christina Sing use a moniker that describes their surprising partnership – Destineak – a unique destination. After all, it’s not every day that a veteran punk rock drummer drops everything to lock up a young jazz singer in his studio in hopes of making a hit record and buying a sailboat. This is exactly what Destineak has been working towards for the last 5 years. They have been performing and recording non-stop on Canada’s West Coast, and in 2009 won Vancouver Nightlife Award’s “Best Live Performance Group of the Year.

This year, they are set to take the world by storm
with their multimedia assault –
"Sirens" - An 8 SONG, 8
VIDEO CD/DVD Set including wicked remixes
from top industry names. Self-proclaimed multimedia
lushes, they were dumb struck when Moshpit put the
idea to them.
“It was like “what?” Bobby laughs, “You want us to write video treatments for every song, direct them and edit them?” (Bobby is a pro videographer in his other life by the way). What seemed a little daunting at first proved to be second nature for Destineak. “Filming the 8 videos made us evaluate all our Freudian slips and past drunken rants to pull out all the characters we had screaming inside." says Christina "What a gong show.” Examples of the lunacy are “Bird Lady” caged by the “Mad Geek”. How about “Robot Wife” and “50’s Dad?” Then there are the “Post Apocalyptic Warriors.” The plethora of material begs the question whether they are brilliant or just plain crazy. The jury is still out. But visual stimulation aside, Destineak is really about the music, and they have crafted one funky ass, poetic, electronic record.
It might seem like a long time to wait, 5 years, for their first release, but Christina and Bobby know that Destineak would NOT have anything of value to say if it weren’t for the cruel and unusual punishment that they’ve put themselves through to get here.
When listening to the fat melodic bass sounds and tight drum programming on Destineak’s EP, you wouldn’t guess that 5 years ago Bobby was only starting out on his production legs. “When I was writing music by myself as Drumattic (his one man drum and visual show), I was pretty experimental,” muses Bobby, “But after first hearing Christina play me a song with her guitar, I made it my mission to show the world her songs.” So began Bobby’s string of sleepless nights at his geek pod, learning one audio program after another, tweeking knobs on soft and hardware, bug eyed from caffeine, while juggling his full time DJ/drum gigs in Vancouver’s electro house scene. Christina waited tables, sang in jazz clubs and hotel lounges, saving up her tips to buy the next piece of recording gear.
With the music industry changing right before their eyes, it was all they could do to keep up. Building all their own websites, making all the posters and artwork, editing the videos, managing their bookings, and producing all the music was and is a full time job. You won't catch Bobby and Christina complaining though. On the contrary, they recommend it to anybody wanting to get into the industry. Christina states: “It’s pretty crazy when you think about it, but when we both started recording music, you had to have a band come in and record the parts. It has been both fascinating and rewarding for us to write all the songs and program all the sounds. The best thing about the label we’re with now is that they trust us with full creative control because our vision is so strong. We just want to put on a kick ass show, write memorable songs, and make the world a little better if we can.”
Ready or not, that vision is going to be made very clear to the masses this year, and if you don’t have a problem with high energy, wicked live beats and powerful hook laded vocals, we’ll see you in the front row getting splashed by Bobby’s sweat while he’s killing his drums.
